Budget travellers and backpackers are spoiled for choice when it comes to selecting a place to stay. Accommodation ranges from a mattress on a flat roof, camp sites and shared rooms to basic but clean and comfortable rooms with facilities. Prices are as low as a couple of dollars per night. Comfortable guest houses and hotels falling into a mid range of prices are also widely available but when it comes to travellers demanding the very best that money can buy the bad news is that there is considerably less to choose from. The good news is that what is available is World class.
Most of the top quality accommodation is concentrated in Amman, along the shores of the Dead Sea, at the Rose Red City of Petra and the all year round seaside destination of Aqaba. Luxury hotels are non existent in the North of Amman, the Eastern and Southern Deserts and along the historic King’s Highway. Most visitors exploring North Jordan and the Desert Castles of the Eastern Desert do so by day trips from the capital, Amman.
The Kempinski Hotel (Tel: (06) 520 0200) on Abdul Hameed Shouman Street in the Shmeisani are is one of the best of the city centre hotels. It has the last word in luxury from its superb views to the excellent dining in its restaurants.
Le Meridian (Tel: (06) 569 6511) is close to the Kempinski on Queen Noor Street. This Starwoods establishment has a number of restaurants serving cuisine from Japan, Mongolia, Lebanon and a wide international selection
The most luxurious and probably the finest hotel in Jordan is the recently opened Kempinski Hotel Ishatar Dead Sea (Tel: (05) 356 8888). The design was inspired by the fabled Hanging Gardens of Babylon and is heavily influenced by Sumerian architecture. Villa accommodation is surrounded by a series of terraced gardens, waterfalls, fountains and pools.
Next door to the Kempinski Ishtar and jockeying for position with it for the title of the lowest hotel on planet earth is the Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea (Tel: (05) 3561111). This is a modern luxury seaside resort designed to look like an old Ottoman village.
The evening view from both of these hotels is breathtaking with the setting sun bathing the West bank in a golden light.
The Taybet Zaman Hotel and Resort (Tel (03) 215 0111) in the nearby village of Taybeh is unique. While the Mövenpick at the Dead Sea is modelled on a 19th century Ottoman village this one is the real McCoy. All of the suites have been formed from authentic village houses, linked by winding lanes and souks where you will find traditional Arab craftsmen pursuing centuries old trades.
Aqaba’s Moevenpick Resort & Residence (Tel: (03) 203 4020) on King Hussein Street has unbelievable views of the Gulf of Aqaba and The Red Sea. It also has direct access to its own private beach, excellent restaurants and full facilities. It is probably the finest hotel in Southern Jordan.
